Rhode Island Appointment and Termination Requirements For Residents and Nonresidents
Effective January 1, 2025, Rhode Island made updates around appointment renewals, termination, and appointment requirements for resident and nonresident producers. Please see the attachments for more information.

- Rhode Island removed the annual contracted producer fee of $30.00
- Reworded the termination for cause requirements
- Added termination without cause requirements
- A producer must be appointed to act as an agent of an insurer.
- A producer who is not acting as an agent of an insurer is not required to become appointed.
- To appoint a producer as its agent, the insurer must file a notice of appointment within 15 days from the date the first insurance application is submitted.
- The notice of appointment must be filed in a Commissioner-approved format.
- An insurer may appoint a producer to all or some insurers within its holding company system or group by filing a single appointment request.
- An insurer must pay an appointment fee for each producer appointed by the insurer.
- Each year, an insurer who has agency contracts with Rhode Island producers must electronically file a written report listing the contracted resident and nonresident producers for the calendar year.
