Requires a $50,000 surety bond for resident public adjusters (individuals and business entities). Nonresidents are required to hold an active adjuster license in their home state to be eligible. Business entities are required to designate a licensed Public Adjuster in Virginia as responsible for the business entity's compliance.

Exemptions to CE

Resident producers who are at least 65 years old and have held a Virginia license for 20 consecutive years don’t need to worry about CE requirements. Also, resident producers at least 65 years old who’ve held their license for the preceding four years and hold a license authority for Virginia for at least 20 of the immediately preceding 30 years may also be exempt from maintaining CE requirements.

What if a producer missed the renewal date?

Reinstatements only apply to individual licenses. Individual licenses may be reinstated within one year from the renewal date. In addition to the original renewal fee, a reinstatement fee that is double the renewal fee will be required. Renewal fee is $10 plus a $20 reinstatement fee per LOA. All CE requirements must be satisfied before submitting a reinstatement.

If you have only one license type or hold both Life & Annuities and Health licenses, the state requires that you complete 16 credit hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal period. Producers with multiple licenses or LOAs must take 24 CE hours. Producers should be careful to be sure not to take more than 75 percent of credits from agency-sponsored or company-sponsored courses.

Virginia Pre-Licensing Examination Changes

Effective March 20, 2025, Virginia's new pre-licensing examinations will be live.  CE Providers are asked to review the updated exam content outlines and make necessary changes to their pre-licensing education materials.  Please see the attachment for more information. 

Virginia Changing Payment Processing Method Related to Surplus Lines Reporting

Effective June 3, 2024, Virginia Bureau of Insurance moved its payment processing to J.P. Morgan Chase and its affiliated partner Paymentus.  To facilitate electronic payments, Virginia’s new Company Identification Number (0000408976) must be provided to your Accounts Payable Department.

Virginia to Disallow Reinstatements for Admin Term for CE Status

Effective October 13, 2023, Virginia will no longer allow applicants with the status of Admin Term for CE to reinstate through NIPR.  The affected applications are Resident Licensing and Resident Licensing Renewals.

Virginia Adding Validation to Prevent Amendments

Effective June 9, 2023, Virginia will add new validation to prevent an amendment transaction if the applicant’s license is in the renewal period. The applicant must first renew the license and then submit the amendment transaction. 

Virginia Will Add Non-Uniform Questions for Viatical Settlement Broker

Effective June 9, 2023, Virginia will add new Non-Uniform Questions for Viatical Settlement Broker applicants. These will be required for Resident, Nonresident, Resident Renewal, and Nonresident Renewals.

Update: Virginia Fee for “Admin Term” for CE Status

Virginia has updated the effective date for related to the fee for Admin Term for CE status reason. The new effective date is January 13, 2023. Previously the effective date was December 28, 2022.

Virginia Applicants with “Admin Term” Status for CE Will Have Fee Update

Effective ~~December 28, 2022~~ January 13, 2023, if an applicant's status is Admin Term for CE, then a $20 fee per line of authority will be assessed after the expiration date. On January 12, 2023 the effective date was updated to January 13, 2023.

Virginia Updates Late Renewals and Reinstatements

On April 1, 2022, Virginia will be determining if a license is eligible for a late renewal or reinstatement by the authority status date for that producer. A licensee may have a late renewal or submission of a reinstatement on both their resident and nonresident license for up to one year after the LOA status date.

Virginia Changes Appointment Fee

As of January 1, 2022, the appointment fee was reduced from $10 to $7. This change will be reflected starting April 1, 2022, quarterly billing and for anything following this date.
